For more than 135 years, The Beechwood Home has stood as a sanctuary of specialized clinical excellence, personal dignity, and family-centered neurological care.
A 135-Year Heritage of Compassionate Care
In April 1888, the Associated Charities of Cincinnati invited a visionary group of civic advocates to address a critical community void: the desperate need for a dedicated, long-term sanctuary for individuals suffering from severe, chronic conditions who were often neglected by conventional hospitals.
Within two and a half years, a modest residence was rented at the corner of Saunders and Bigelow Streets in Mount Auburn. A skilled nurse was hired at the salary of $14 per month, and in October 1890, the Home for the Incurables officially opened its doors.
From that inaugural day, the institution made a solemn, non-negotiable pledge: to open its doors to adults regardless of race, creed, national origin, or financial standing—a principle of pure compassion that remains our bedrock today.

Putting Down Roots on Pogue Avenue
By 1893, admissions to the Home were growing so rapidly that larger quarters were secured in Walnut Hills. Less than 12 years after opening its doors, the cornerstone was laid for a permanent campus on Pogue Avenue in Hyde Park—built on five tranquil acres designed to accommodate 40 residents. During this transformative era, the facility was formally renamed The Beechwood Home.
Through decades of community partnership, charity balls, lawn fetes, and generous bequests, the home nurtured strong operational reserves. In 1968, when advancing clinical requirements demanded a brand-new building, the current facility was constructed just three feet from the existing one. It was completed and occupied without borrowing a single dollar.
Continually modernized with cutting-edge medical infrastructure, specialized therapy suites, and private resident rooms, this Hyde Park campus remains a peaceful sanctuary where science and warmth unite.

The Vision Takes Root

Debt-Free Modern Facility
Fueled by decades of community generosity, bazaars, and bequests, a new modern building was constructed just three feet from the existing home and opened debt-free without borrowing a single dollar.
